4 YEARS MAKING NEIGHBORHOOD
The project Making neighborhoods was born in 2013 thanks to the collaboration with the South African organization Africa Centre. At the time Jiwar hosted the South-African anthropologist and photographer Sydelle Willow Smith with a project called Making neighborhoods, that turned into the name for Jiwar’s project. Since then, the project benefits from the support of the “Barcelona Acció Intercultural” program from the city of Barcelona.
With “Making neighborhood” Jiwar suggests a critical and creative reflection on the complex situation of living together in the city. This project analyzes the concept of neighborhood (the main theme of our project and source of inspiration), in order to reflect on an essential aspect of the contemporary world: the concept of mobility. This becomes a universal issue concerning the current firmness of established models. From the displacement of the tourist agencies to forced migrations or exiles, the multifaced aspects of mobility affect the feeling, the idea or the experience of homeland and self identity, arousing implications for one’s self-perception, for “what and whom one could identify as” in a city.
Until today, three projects around the concept of neighborhood and homeland have been developed through an international open call, leading to a series of creative reflections on public space, migration, relations between the neighborhoods and civic identity.
