Memory and City. Project en curs Jiwar-Elif Gülen

We are looking for people from the city of Barcelona who are 70 or older and who live in the house where they were born or they grew up as kids, to be interviewed and photographed at home.

At the fifth edition of the project Making neighbourhood (2017) one of the selected was the turkish artist Elif Gülen. During 5 weeks she was invited to develop her project  “The Locals” which she had already worked in other European cities like Belfast, Paris, Budapest and Istanbul. Elif met older people from the neighborhood of Gracia who still live in the apartment or house where they were born and who have lived in their own skin changes in the neighborhood’s lifestyle, major historical events, change of habits, etc. From his testimony of the everyday in his space of privacy (home), Elif portrays these people and includes fragments of his memories or experiences. The project ended with an exhibition at the headquarters of the Gràcia district (December 2017-January 2018).
The success of the proposal made us decide to make it bigger and deepen in the look of the testimonies, the history of the houses and the neighborhoods. In this way, under the name of “Memory and City”, we started a new project with four hands Elif Gülen-Jiwar looking for profiles in all the districts of Barcelona.
The result of this will be a publication (interviews and photographs) of quality that honors the memory of these people and vindicates the greatness of the anonymous lives, which also allows contributing to a richer and more human vision of the city. The publication must be edited for Sant Jordi 2019. This project has the support of the Barcelona City Council and also has the collaboration of Amics de la Gent Gran.
