Research, creative and production residency at Jiwar (Barcelona) from the 5th October to 14th November 2017

  • a local artist (someone of any nationality who does not require space in the residence and who knows the local and national context).
  • an international artist of any nationality.

Making neighbourhood has grown to become a project which creatively reflects what we are and who we are in the context of the shared cityscape. Once again, we believe that critical thought driven through the narrative of the creators produces elements which are difficult to access through militancy or political discourse.

Making neighbourhood_5 seeks to stress the issue of barriers to mobility, viewing it as a contemporary world-wide issue. This year’s call hopes to investigate the social changes provoked by the movement of people, viewing mobility as something more complex: as a value, an ability, a combination of competencies and/or social capital.

We are not looking for a picture which captures the status quo on the borders but one which goes beyond the tensions between the latent, the possible and the not- possible, to reveal how political administrative decisions can affect the lives of thousands of people. With this in mind, for this year’s edition we are looking to shed light on these tensions and individual tragedies which respond to global, national and regional tendencies.

Intercultural perspective and participative methodology will add value to the project which Jiwar will take into account when assessing the proposals.

  • The local artist will receive a grant of 500€ in total and coverage of the production costs up to a maximum of 300€.
  • The international artist in residence will receive a plane ticket as well 450€ as per diem plus coverage of production costs up to maximum of 300€ and residence in Jiwar (worth 1,100€, meals no included).

  • Following the residency, the artist promises to send a report (deadline 15th December 2017 and of 4,000 characters including spaces), evaluating the results obtained through their experience, as well as images of the formal results of the project.
  • The artist must inform the responsible people of the centre in the case of any incidence which affects their commitment to the project, establishing an agreement in the case of abandonment of the project.
  • The artist commits to carrying out the proposed project under the agreed terms.
  • In the case of the participant carrying out changes with regards to the initial proposal which affect the content of the project or its creation he/she must inform Jiwar.
  • The artist must submit at least two blog entries of the project during their residency.
  • At no point will the artist be given a grant for working on projects other than Making neighbourhood_5.

  • The artist will be accompanied, supported and advised during the process of creation, research and production.
  • Jiwar reserves the right to publicise or share the results of the work through its social platforms, web page, publication or any other form of propagation which it considers opportune.
  • The production costs assumed by Jiwar may not be more than 300€. Only the production costs directly relating to the project will be reimbursed.
  • An exhibition will take place in the Exhibition Space of Gràcia District (Barcelona) from the 13th December 2017 to the 8th January 2018.
  • The results will be presented in the Global Eco Forum 2018 that will take place in Barcelona (May 2018).

The project Making neighbourhood was born in 2013 following the collaboration with the South African organisation Africa Centre when the anthropologist and photographer Sydelle Willow Smith was hosted in the residence while carrying out a project called Making neighbourhood which gave Jiwar’s project its name. Since then, the project has counted on the support of the program Barcelona Interculturalitat run by the Barcelona City Council.
